Female Politics at Frieze London

It hasn’t escaped anyone that female uprisings and empowerment were a strong focus the past year and continues to be. Naturally, this female affair was heavily reflected in the trend-sensitive art world. At Frieze Art Fair in London,  a special section named Social Work  had been dedicated to female artists known for their pioneering, feminist work on challenging a male-dominated industry. Among them, one could discover Helen Chadwick (known for opposing stereotypical imagery of female bodies), as well as activist Nancy Spero, (noted for her work on sexism and war injustices). To celebrate 100 years of women’s rights to vote in UK, artist Tracey Emin and her studio had organised a secret postcard sale by female artists which served as one of the highlights at the fair.  To top off the female theme, the talks programme at Frieze Masters (the section for classic art at Frieze) featured exclusively women this year. Even if the art world is constantly transitional, we hope that this message of artistic girl power will become part of the permanent collection.
